Description

Catena Zapata Alta Malbec 2022 is a benchmark expression of high-altitude Argentine Malbec, rooted in the Catena family’s pioneering history. First planted by Nicola Catena in 1902, Malbec reached new heights under Nicolás Catena, who redefined the variety by championing high-elevation vineyards. Alta Malbec is crafted from the family’s historic sites—Angélica, La Pirámide, Nicasia, and Adrianna—using the proprietary Catena Cuttings that deliver purity, structure, and complexity.

Each vineyard block is harvested separately to preserve natural acidity and achieve balanced alcohol. Whole berries are hand-loaded into small fermentation bins and 225–500 L barrels, with lots vinified individually. Fermentation and maceration last 10–35 days, including partial cold maceration, and proceed with wild yeasts. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur in barrel, followed by active bâtonnage to enhance texture and protect the wine while minimizing SO₂. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak, resulting in seamless integration.

The palate is layered and refined, combining concentrated dark fruit with floral lift, subtle spice, and finely polished tannins. Powerful yet precise, Alta Malbec 2022 captures the elegance and depth of Catena Zapata’s high-mountain terroirs and promises graceful evolution in the cellar.
